Trinamool Congress leader Raju De was shot late on Thursday night in the Jhinaidanga area of Cooch Behar district, under the Cooch Behar-2 block. The incident took place around 11 PM when De, who is the Sahakari-Sabhapati of the Cooch Behar-2 Panchayat Samiti and former Anchal President of Chakchaka, was returning home after party-related work. Unidentified assailants in a black Scorpio vehicle allegedly opened fire, injuring him in the right shoulder.
De was immediately taken to a local hospital, where he underwent surgery. His condition was reported to be serious at the time of admission. Police have begun an investigation and are reviewing CCTV footage and checking vehicle movement records in the area. A case has been registered, and security measures in the region have been tightened following the incident.
In connection with the case, police detained the son of BJP MLA Sukumar Roy, who represents the North Cooch Behar Assembly constituency, for questioning. Officials have not confirmed further details regarding the questioning. No arrests have been made yet, and investigations are ongoing.
